We are what’s wrong with the world today

I and my 7 year old son are on our balcony and we’re looking at the roof that covers a supermarket. We’ve been observing a cat on that roof, inching closer, very cautiously towards a squirrel. The roof is metal, so she knows she can’t take a chance on making any sound. The cat is brown and furry, healthy and young. But looking at the amount of caution she's showing, I feel that she’s really hungry.

The squirrel, on the other hand, is unaware of this cat that’s devouring her in her dreams.

The cautious advances continue, and now we’ve been observing for a good 15 minutes. The cat has come quite close now. Just as she is ready to make her final, defining move, the squirrel scurries away.

I shout, “Come on, catty!”.

At the same time, my son sighs, “Thank god!”.

He hears what I said.

Shocked, he looks at me and says, “What’s wrong with you, Mumma!”, siding with the prey, not the predator.

Well, I guess, nothing. I am just a grown-up.

Or am I a symbol of what's wrong with the world right now?
